iMessage & Call Syncing

This is still BETA. This is fully working, but may have bugs from time to time. We'll make sure you know about any improvements!

We know how much of your relationships rely on texting and calling on your cell phone. CRMs couldn't keep track of that... until now.

This is just for people who have an iPhone AND a Macbook or Apple Desktop.

We're always seeing how we can bring as much information about your relationships as possible, so stay tuned.

Installation Instructions

This will take about five minutes to set up, then you're good to go! You'll have to do a few things on your desktop. The steps below might be confusing - we've included a video below to show you how we set it up in a record one minute 34 seconds!

  1. Download the latest version here
  2. Double-click on the downloaded file
  3. Drag the "Relatable for Mac" icon into the "Applications" folder
  4. Go to your Applications, then double-click on Relatable for Mac
  5. You might get a scary warning that it "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it." This is expected, given the permissions the app needs to access your messages. If so, click the 🍎 icon in your computer menu bar, click on System Settings, then Privacy & Security. If you scroll down, you'll see an Open Anyway button. Click on that! You should only need to do this once
  6. You should then get a pop-up screen with two warnings. That just tells you Relatable needs you to do two things - see next steps!
  7. Enabling Full Disk Access: We need you to turn on this permission on your computer for Relatable to access your text messages (see more detail below). To do it, click Open Settings (or click the 🍎 icon in your computer's menu bar, click on System Settings, then Privacy & Security) - then find the section that says Full Disk Access and click on it. Then find Relatable for Mac and turn on that little toggle switch to the right of it. It should ask you to quit and restart the app, and when you do, you'll get a nice little message "🟢 Relatable is retrieving your latest messages and calls" - you're done with this part!
  8. Connecting to Relatable: OK, so we need to actually connect to your Relatable account. Click the Open Settings button, or head to your Settings page, then click on Accounts, then click Manage API Keys. Click Add New Key. It'll ask you to give it a new, so why don't you use "Relatable for Mac" (this is just so you can see which apps are connected later on). Click the copy button next to the new key. THIS IS JUST LIKE A PASSWORD FOR YOUR ACCOUNT - DO NOT GIVE THIS TO ANYONE. Sorry, just had to warn ya there. Paste that link into the window, right where it says, well "Paste your API Key here"
  9. The window should disappear instantly. If you click on the new Relatable icon in your menu bar, you should see two green lights, showing that your data is syncing into Relatable!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

Unfortunately, there's no way for any application to see who you're talking to on your cell phone - cell phone manufacturers and service providers don't let you. But...

Your computer stores a copy of your SMS & iMessage conversations, as well as your phone calls, to a local database on your computer. By installing Relatable for Mac, we grab that information, as well as your address book, and sync it to your Relatable account (and nowhere else)

Whoa, whoa, whoa - what information are you grabbing?

The only information we sync is:

  • Your address book
  • The timestamp of the last message you sent to someone (individually or in a group)
  • The timestamp of the last call you made or picked up with someone, as well as how long the call was.

We do not see, store, or sync the contents of your messages, attachments, or call data other than the duration. Just like all the other information in Relatable, we treat this with the utmost confidentiality and only take what we need.

Why do you need "Full Disk Access" permission?

To protect you from harmful applications, Apple normally doesn't let applications you install access anything other than a few basic folders, like your Documents. The database that stores your phone calls and text messages is hidden deep in your hard drive, so enabling Full Disk Access gives the app permission to access that folder. Unfortunately, there's no other way currently to give us limited & specific access. If you're not comfortable with this permission, we totally get it.

OK, so what happens with all this information?

Relatable is now tracking your calls and texts! More specifically:

  • If we find a matching person in your database (using their name, phone number, or email address), we'll add an interaction with the timestamp. We'll only add one, and keep updating it with the latest timestamp. Don't worry, we're not going to add an interaction for EVERY call or text you make with them.
  • If we don't find a matching person, you'll see this as a suggestion in your Uncategorized table. Note: we hide these by default, so just click on the filter icon in the top right corner of the table, and turn on "Phone Book" and "Unknown"

We also sync your primary Address Book into Relatable!

  • If we find a matching person in your database (using their name, phone, or email address), we'll update your existing contacts, filling in any blanks.
  • If we don't find any matching contacts, we'll add them as a suggestion in your Uncategorized table, just like importing contacts from your Google or Outlook address book. Note: we hide these by default, so just click on the filter icon in the top right corner of the table, and turn on "Phone Book"

Do I need to re-run this daily?

This app runs in the background every few minutes, so as long as your computer is on and connected to the internet, you should be all set. You can always click on the Relatable icon in the menu bar to see the last time it synced information.

I'm missing some calls and text messages

  1. Make sure the app is running and both lights are green
  2. Take a look at your Uncategorized table, making sure to click on the filter icon in the top right corner of the table, and turn on "Phone Book" and "Unknown"
  3. You can contact our support team by clicking on Support on the left side of your Relatable account - however, keep in mind, for your security, we can't see what's on your phone or computer!
